2017 marks the 98th anniversary of the Millinocket Memorial Library. As we approach our centennial year, I encourage you to consider the library’s role in the history of this community and ask you to imagine our region without this vital resource. 2016 was filled with many “wins” for the Library, however, we have only 12 months of operating funds remaining and we need your help now, more than ever, to remain open.
As you probably know, the library lost most of its Town funding in 2015 after the devastating closure of the Town’s paper mill. Thanks to an enormous effort by the Friends of the Library, many dedicated volunteers, and your generosity, the library continues to serve. I am inspired by the wide support for the Millinocket Memorial Library, and we are proud of our accomplishments:
- Received $13,521 from over 100 individual donors, $1,184 in bottle return donations, $5,105 in memorial donations, $4,817 from marathon runners, and $5,268 from other fundraising events;
- Raised $14,560 at the Friends’ annual Dinner Auction;
- Awarded $10,000 in seed funding from the Stephen and Tabitha King Foundation;
- Increased our operating hours to 38 per week;
- Hosted a panel discussion with State Library representatives to plan the future of our library;
- The library was incorporated under the governance of a new Board of Directors.
As you can see, we have come a long way over the past year! With your continued support, the Millinocket Memorial Library plans to expand access to learning opportunities and social connections for everyone in our community.
The future of our library depends on each of you! The good news is that the cost to operate the library for one year is only $22 per person (based on a population of 4,506 per census data). The staff and Board of the library are committed to securing grants that will improve our technology and facilities, enhance our book and materials collection, and support our partners in making Millinocket a great place to live, work, and play. The grants that we pursue from outside funding agencies will help us to achieve our mission, but your support is needed to fund the operating costs that keep the doors open.
